Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Civic education is essential in fostering informed and active citizens, particularly in the context of democratic governance. Potiskum Local Government Area in Yobe State, like many other rural areas in Nigeria, has faced challenges in promoting civic awareness due to limited access to educational resources and low levels of political participation. Digital media, including websites, social media platforms, and online educational programs, has emerged as a crucial tool for enhancing civic education. By providing accessible and timely information on voting rights, political processes, and governance issues, digital media platforms play a significant role in educating citizens. This study explores the potential of digital media as a catalyst for civic education in Potiskum LGA, focusing on its effectiveness in increasing political awareness, voter engagement, and civic participation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media has revolutionized access to information, there is limited research on its specific role in promoting civic education in Potiskum LGA. Despite the widespread use of mobile phones and social media in the region, many citizens, particularly in rural areas, still lack adequate understanding of their civic rights and responsibilities. The study aims to assess the extent to which digital media has been effective in enhancing civic education, fostering political awareness, and encouraging participation in democratic processes in Potiskum.

  1. Digital media plays a significant role in promoting civic education in Potiskum LGA.

  3. Barriers such as limited internet access and digital illiteracy hinder the effectiveness of digital media in promoting civic education.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of digital media in promoting civic education in rural areas, particularly Potiskum LGA. The findings will help policymakers, civil society organizations, and media practitioners understand the potential of digital media in fostering informed and active citizenship, particularly during elections and other civic engagement opportunities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the use of digital media for civic education in Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State. The research is limited to digital platforms and does not include other traditional forms of civic education.
